Quick Fix : Clean-up Duplicate Remote Web Access Certificates

SSLI noticed this thread in the forum a while ago, and setup a Lab network to reproduce it. Sure enough after a few days, my local machine certificate store is full of duplicated certificates.

The issue only seems to affect Essentials 2016 and only if you are using the free remotewebaccess.com certificates.

The issue is also discussed here on the MCB Systems blog.

Unfortunately for me work took over and i was not able to spend any more time on it, and with responses from Microsoft for any Essentials related issue being, shall we say, pedestrian, i wont be holding out any hope of a fix soon.

Remote Web Access login page Redirect

LogoThis post comes courtesy of Susan Bradley, in that she highlighted the issue to me. In turn it was highlighted to her via TechSpeeder.

The issue is a relatively simple one, in previous versions of Essentials, visiting http://server or http://server.remotewebaccess.com it would automatically redirect you to the RWA Login page at /remote. In 2016 this is not occurring.

In 2012 R2 this behaviour is controlled via default.aspx in particular, this line.

<%@ Page Language="C#" AutoEventWireup="true" CodeBehind="Default.aspx.cs" Inherits="Microsoft.WindowsServerSolutions.Web.RootSite._Default" %>

Looking at the Content of the Default Web Site in 2016, we can see the standard IIS InetPub wwwroot folder. This is odd because usually in Essentials that path has been updated to C:\Program Files\Windows Server\Bin\WebApps\Site.

Windows Server Essentials – Configuration Troubleshooter

powershell2xa4I had a support case this week where it became apparent to me that there is no quick and easy way to test Essentials Servers for Configuration errors. Manually working through IIS or Certificates is prone to human error, as was proved to me, by me missing certain key things.

Uncharacteristically i decided to write a PowerShell script to save me from this sort of embarrassment in the future, and make me look really good next time i need to troubleshoot an Essentials Server.
