Following on from my recent post about issues, another topic of conversation is the actual SSL installation process for the RWA.
Again i have blogged on that before, and the new wizard makes the process a lot lot easier. However if you get stuck with generating a CSR (Certificate Signing Request) then you can always use IIS to do this for you.

Essentials 2012 Manage DNS AutoDiscovery

Listening to the ‘Home Server Show’ podcast recently, the conversation inevitably steered towards Client DNS on Essentials. It reminded me that i had written a script last year, to manage the UR3 feature of Essentials 2012 that being ‘DNS AutoDiscovery’ but never actually shared it.
I uploaded it to the TechNet Gallery today.

Congratulations on the purchase of your brand new Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials Server. I’m sure she will give you years of trouble free.. er.. serving.
No doubt one of the features that attracted you to Essentials R2 over its predecessor was the unique way it can be licensed in Hyper-V. No?
Regardless of that, you may well be familiar with the Client PC Backup Service that comes as part of this OS. You may also know that you create a USB key to boot the client PC from in order to launch Bare Metal Restore. Something i documented with real aplomb on YouTube.
However, if you have decided to virtualise your Essentials server – how are you going to get that USB disk plugged in? Assuming you do already have a USB key what if your NIC is not supported?

You may have seen an error like this on Outlook 2010 when trying to remove an obsolete account.
You may also be impressed to know the same thing occurs in Outlook 2013.
You may also have resigned yourself to creating a new profile, however that is not the only way!

..and it doesn’t make any sense. Or perhaps worse, it can be used to make a point it might otherwise not support. 68% of people know this to be fact.
Most famously of course a similar incident nearly ruined the Rutles career.

Sadly this has happened to me, and what started off as quite amusing, has ended up being very stressful and potentially damaging to me, my employers and frankly anyone else because it demonstrates how much we are at the mercy of the media and rely on them to do some basic checking before they go ahead and print something.
